This article provides step-by-step instructions to measure resistance, voltage, and current using a digital clamp meter.
Measuring Resistance
A digital clamp meter feeds a continuous current source to measure the voltage across the tested resistor. It then applies Ohm's law to determine the resistance using the present and the consequent voltage.
A clamp meter works in a manner comparable to how a digital multimeter measures resistance. The selection knob should be turned to the Ω symbol to configure the clamp meter to record resistance. The two clamp meter probes should be placed across both ends of an axial resistor. The detected resistance value will be displayed on the digital clamp meter's LCD screen. The resistor color-coding technique may also be utilized to confirm this value.
Measuring Voltage
Most digital clamp meters offer a voltage-measuring feature typically used to assess and review the outputs of components, devices, and circuits. Select the digital clamp meter's AC or DC voltage measuring function.
A voltage measurement in an electrical assembly is always done between two sources and thus mandates the installation of two probes: insert the black probe for the reference level (usually ground) and the red one on the test point on the circuit or structure requiring voltage measurement. You can see the voltage that was measured on the meter's display. The recorded voltage would be inverted if the probes were switched at these points.
Measuring Current
Digital clamp meters make it relatively easy to measure current. With or without insulation on the wire, a clamp meter may measure the recent passing through a conducting wire. The tested cable must be separated from other wires for precise current measurements. You may choose between measuring DC and AC currents with the SELECT button. Then, you can select the appropriate current range using the spinning dial or buttons.
To establish the starting point for the current measurement, push the REL (Relative) button to reset the meter reading to zero. While the current is still running through the current-carrying cable or conductor, insert it between the jaws of the digital clamp meter to measure the current.
